Let’s start with some considerations about soccer. Italian soccer.
Could merger between existing clubs represent a solution in order to lower the cost and improve profitability? At the end of the season, only one wins the league on the pitch, but 18 out of 20 lose on the balance sheet.
I think that by increasing the fan base, a merged team would be able to reach higher revenues while keeping costs at a sustainable level. Moreover a merged team would be definitely more attractive for sponsors, commercials and media rights.
